“Executive presence” is one of the most talked about—and least clearly defined—leadership qualities. Many women assume it means being the most polished person in the room or speaking with constant authority.
In reality, executive presence is much simpler: it’s the ability to communicate in a way that builds trust, clarity, and confidence in your leadership. It's not about perfection. It’s about how people experience you when you speak.

What Executive Presence Actually Signals:
When leaders demonstrate executive presence, others see:
Clear thinking
Calm under pressure
Confidence in decisions
Respectful communication
Focus on outcomes
In other words, it’s less about how you look and more about how you communicate your thinking.
Scenario #1 Speaking in a Meeting
Instead of:“I just wanted to quickly share a thought…”
Why it works: You remove minimizing language and get directly to the value of your point.
Scenario #2: Giving an Update to Leadership
Instead of: Walking through every detail first
Try: "We’re on track for the launch. The only risk we’re monitoring is vendor timing, and we have a backup plan.”
Why it works: Executives listen for outcomes, risks, and solutions.
Scenario #3: Responding to a tough question
Instead of:Feeling pressure to answer immediately
Try:“That’s an important question. Let me take a moment to think about the best approach.”
Why it works: Pausing shows thoughtfulness and composure.
A Simple Executive Presence Formula
Before speaking, ask yourself:
What is the headline?
Why does it matter?
What action or decision is needed?
Then deliver it simply.
Clarity + composure = credibility.
Executive presence isn’t reserved for senior leaders.
It’s built every time you communicate your ideas with clarity, calm, and conviction. Learn how to communicate with confidence in the moments that matter most. Join us at She Speaks Saturday March 28th.
