Most professional relationships don’t stall because of lack of contact—they stall because conversations stay surface-level.
We catch up. We exchange updates. We stay polite. But depth—the kind that builds trust, advocacy, and long-term connection—comes from different conversations. This week, we’re focusing on the conversations that actually deepen professional relationships.
What Deepening Conversations Do Differently

Conversations that strengthen relationships tend to:
Move beyond status updates
Invite perspective, not performance
Create space for honesty and curiosity
Signal trust without oversharing
Depth doesn’t require vulnerability on demand. It requires intention.
Conversation Type #1: Perspective-Shifting Conversations.
What they sound like:
Instead of: "So how’s everything going?”
Try: "What’s been most challenging—or most energizing—in your role lately?”
Why it works: This invites reflection, not a polished answer. It shows you’re interested in how they experience their work.
Conversation Type #2: Growth-Oriented Conversations.
What they sound like:
Instead of: "What are you working on right now?”
Try: "What’s something you’re trying to get better at this year?”
Why it works: Growth-focused questions build mutual respect and open the door to future support and collaboration.
Conversation Type #3: Meaningful Follow-Up Conversations.
What they sound like:
Instead of: "Just checking in!”
Try: "I’ve been thinking about what you shared last time about [specific topic]. How did that unfold?”
Why it works: Remembering and referencing past conversations signals care and credibility. It’s one of the fastest ways to build trust.
Strong professional relationships aren’t built by saying the “right” thing. They’re built by creating space for the right kind of conversation. You don’t need more contacts. You need more meaningful conversations with the right people.
Warmly,
Marie Book
